More than 80,000 animals helped since 1984
Caring and dedication pave the way
In early 1984, the original board of Tidewater Humane gathered at the home of
Monica Watkins in Virginia Beach to determine the course of the fledgling
organization. Then a chapter of Friends of Animals, the loose-knit group
was hard at work to provide spay/neuter services to all pet owners in Hampton
Roads, regardless of income. Through a network of participating
veterinarians who performed the surgeries in their own offices, our local FoA
group struggled to make ends meet. Then co-founder Connie Wallaert [now
Connie Faivre!!!] suggested we take the leap of faith, to discard the "chapter"
status of a larger national group and become a 501(c)3 not-for-profit in our own
right, allowing us to do our own fundraising and make our own decisions.
After research, here we are. Our program has changed significantly over
the years, at times having as many as 32 local veterinarians who answered the
call to assist us in helping the animals.
